New National President & Vice President of AIMTC takes Oath of Office

New Delhi, January 24, 2025 : The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), established in 1936, as a nonpolitical, not-for-profit apex body representing India’s road transport sector (both cargo & passenger segments). It encompasses over 95 lakh truckers, 50 lakh passenger vehicle operators, and 3,500 associations nationwide, impacting over 20 crore people directly or indirectly.

At the recently concluded elections, Dr Harish Sabharwal has been unanimously elected to the coveted position of National President of AIMTC.

The Charge Handover & Oath Taking Ceremony of the Newly elected office bearers of AIMTC was held today, where Shri Amritlal Madan, the outgoing President of AIMTC, officially passed on his responsibilities to the newly elected President, Dr. Harish Sabharwal and his Team.

Dr. Harish Sabharwal, the new President of AIMTC reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the challenges of the transport sector and fostering collaboration with the government to initiate reforms in this sector. Some of the key issues that are high on his agenda were discussed.

The transport industry is a critical pillar of the nation’s economy, seamlessly connecting markets, industries, and communities. At its core are drivers whose unwavering commitment ensures the smooth flow of goods and services. The transportation sector is a key contributor to India’s economy, accounting for approximately 7.7% of India’s GDP (PPP adjusted). Within this, road transport remains dominant, contributing 4.5% of GDP in 2005-06 with an annual growth rate of 9.5% driven by India’s rising population and economic development, increasing demand for transportation services.

There are estimated more than 6 crore drivers across all segments of cargo and passenger segments largely in the unorganized sector. Despite their indispensable contributions, drivers have not received the recognition they deserve. On this momentous occasion AIMTC with support of ASRTU, AITD & BOCI declared 24TH DAY of January every year as “National Drivers’ Day” in the august presence of Ms Bansuri Swaraj, Hon’ble Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha); Shri Parvesh Verma, Hon’ble Former Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) , Shri Mahmood Ahmed, IP & TAFS, Addl. Secretary to the Government of India, MoRTH, Shri Ajay Chaudhary, IPS, Spl. CP/Traffic, Delhi , Shri B. N. Puri, Director – Asian Institute of Transport Development & Former Principal Adviser, Planning Commission, Shri Robin Hibu, IPS, Special Commissioner of Police, Delhi Armed Forces, Sh Anil Chhikara, Ex-Deputy Commissioner, Transport Dept, Govt of Delhi ; Dr. T.
