New Delhi, August 28, 2-24 : In May 1966, a group of artists, under the legendary K.C.S Paniker, moved into an idyllic ten-acre plot of land in Injambakkam village, on the coastline of the Bay of Bengal, Madras (now Chennai). In arguably the first experiment of its kind, Paniker envisaged a commune of painters and sculptors who would be free to create passionately even as they made and sold batiks and handicrafts for a living. The group was a core of what was the Madras Art Movement, a distinctive genre of art, independent of the other schools such as the Calcutta School and the Bombay Progressives. Today the “Cholamandal Artist Village” as it is known continues to provide inspiration to the artists of generations old and new that reside and work as a community, even as it approaches the sixtieth year of its existence.
Art Magnum, New Delhi, in its continued mission to delight art connoisseurs everywhere, is privileged to present a collection of unique works that represent the best of generations old and new; from the iconic ground-breaking artists who took their first steps alongside K.C.S. Paniker, and who now serve as mentors, to the young guns who stride their own paths to artistic fulfillment. The show has been curated by Prabhu Viswanathan (RnP Trust).
